据福州海关最新统计，今年1至5月份，福建省共进口集成电路6.79亿个，价值7.33亿美元，较去年同期的增幅都在30％以上。进口的增长表明福建对集成电路需求的旺盛，但在进口芯欣欣向荣的背后，则是国产芯的严重短缺。
有关人士指出，建设福建省集成电路设计中心，将集成电路设计作为福建省建设IC产业群的切入点，对推动福建IC产业链的优化，提升福建信息产业的核心竞争力、汇聚和培育优秀IC高端人才以及推进闽台两岸IC设计业的合作与交流等都有积极意义。
